Window Tinting: How To Know The Laws In Your State

by Kay Ramos

Anyone who tries to learn more about the laws governing automotive window tinting knows that it's a very complicated affair. However, it is important to understand that the automotive window tinting laws vary from state to state. These laws can be significantly different across different states. In addition, these laws are updated on a regular basis, and this makes the laws a bit unpredictable. These rules can also be challenging for people who like to travel a lot across different states, or those who buy their vehicles from other states.

Some of the things to look at for state laws include:

  • The VLT% - this is used to measure or assess car window tints, and it is a measurement of visible light transmission. VLT% is the amount of visible light that penetrates the window tint film - the film VLT% of the window - net VLT%. Know how to calculate VLT or ask a window tinting shop to tell you the VLT of any tint they sell you.

  • Window tint level on the front side - this is the level of window tint (VLT%) permitted on the passenger and driver windows. Generally, it has a higher frequency compared to the real windows, and it allows the driver to be visible from the outside.

  • Window tint level on the rear side windows - this is the level of window tint (VLT%) permitted on the rear side windows. Typically, this percentage is differs from vehicle to vehicle. That means, multi-purpose vehicles and passenger cars have different VLT% on their rear side windows.

  • Tint level on the rear window - this is the level of window tint (VLT%) permitted on the rear window. Generally, the percentage to this is the same as the rear side windows, even though some states tend to be more restrictive.

  • Windshield - there is no state that allows windshields to be tinted. However, some states do allow vehicle owners to add stickers on top of their windshield, typically on the sun shield area.

  • The color - this also varies in different states. Some states do not have restrictions on colors while others only allow a particular type of color or finishing.

Knowing your state laws will help you choose the right tint and shade for your windows, especially if you are purchasing products in another state that doesn't have the same laws. It would be a shame to go through the trouble of upgrading your windows, only to find out that you're liable for fines. Contact a window tinting service for more help.
